RENTS on council property have been increased by just over two pounds in a bid to fund much-needed improvements.

Harlow Council has announced that rents will increase from an average of £44.32 per week to £46.57 per week, generating an estimated £93,000 to carry out housing improvements in the town.

Council leader Mike Danvers said rent levels, which remain amongst the lowest in the south east, were agreed following consultation with tenants' groups individuals.

Assuring residents the extra income would be put to "optimum use", he said: "Housing services will be the first in Harlow to be subjected to the new best value regime, which means we will be able to carry out careful scrutiny and consultation on which improvements are needed."
