Successful in the first National Six Stages Road Relay championships at Sutton Park on Saturday, Shaftesbury's women have won every national title.

Their team completed the 6x4.5km race in 1hr 40mins 33secs to win from Birchfield (1hr 42mins 19secs) with Tipton third (1hr 44mins).

After Caroline Weatherill finished seventh in 17mins 11secs on the opening leg, Stephanie Van Gran took the local club into the lead with 16mins 43secs.

She handed over to Sharon Murphy, who retained second spot in16mins 52secs.

Anne Ridley had a scare as she was preparing to run the fourth leg. Allergic to bees, Anne was stung. Fortunately, after receiving treatment, she was able to run, and regained the lead in 17mins 6secs.

Then Caroline Walsh went well clear in 16mins 29secs, and, on the final leg, Lucy Elliott assured SBH of victory with the third fastest time of the day, 16mins 12secs.

Shaftesbury's B team of Sarah Heath, Emma Brooker, Linda Cole, Caroline Horne, Hazel Sutherland and Lis Dodwell were eighth, and collected a prize as the first B team home.

In the men's 12-stage contest, Shaftesbury were sixth behind Salford, Tipton, London Irish, Birchfield, and Swansea. It was a creditable performance from a team that lacked internationals Dominic Bannister and Nick Francis. But Anthony Whiteman, the latest international newcomer, ran the third fastest shorter leg, with 13mins 58secs for 5km.

In the Hertfordshire women's U17 1,500m, Shaftesbury's Chloe Wilkinson won in a personal best time of 4mins 43.4secs, with her clubmate Lisa Gaul third in 5mins 11secs.

In the U20 run, Shaftesbury's Sarah Stanmore was second in 5mins 3.6secs.
