Woodside Park puddles put Stortford in a muddle

WET weather was the biggest winner in the Ryman League on Saturday as all but six games outside the premier division were cancelled.

Bishop's Stortford's Woodside Park home has had drainage problems all season and the Blues' game with division one basement boys Chertsey Town was inevitably called off.

Stortford's fixture catalogue was further clogged up when their home game against Staines Town on Monday night was also postponed with the pitch still waterlogged.

With a string of wins in recent weeks, the Blues seem to have edged clear of relegation danger. However, Martin Hayes' men will hope to pick up as many points as possible from their last six games to ensure a respectable finish in the final division one table.

They are currently just six points behind Uxbridge who are in ninth place and have played two more games.

Stortford hope for a particularly Good Friday this week as they travel to leaders Croydon, one of only two teams in the division who have chalked up more than the Blues' nine away wins this season.

The teams met twice before Christmas, Stortford winning 1-0 in the league and 2-0 in the Ryman League Cup. They will be aiming for a hat-trick of victories against the South London side who need just six more points to secure promotion to the premier division. Kick-off is at 3pm.

The Blues then meet Harlow Town on Easter Monday: turn inside for a preview on the derby game.

Meanwhile, goalkeeper Richard Day is back in training after suffering an elbow injury at Maidenhead United in February and hopes to be available for selection before the end of the season.

Carl Fannon has completed his four-match suspension and is likely to be in the squad for the trip to Croydon, as is skipper Tony Comerford who has recovered from an ankle injury he picked up against Bognor Regis Town last week.
