LETTERS From Miss Phaedra J. Kelly, Oakfield:
I WOULD like to try to introduce an idea to Island entrepreneurs, which might help raise funds for the suffering Island music service and end ageism in the local arts industry.
There are popular open mic nights in pubs; The Crispin, Newport, King Lud, Ryde, and Vectis Tavern, Cowes, throughout the week, at which people of all age and background may perform live music and song, also poetry, comedy, stage magic and be experimental and pay their dues as a performer.
But, this happens nationwide. The CAMRA people who know of every pub, would know where.
So were they to arrange a national competition, with local heats, this Island of festivals could feature the grand final at, or within, any of the Island’s big rock festivals. Funds taken from that to go to the aforementioned good cause.
Karaoke already has this internationally, and if this can do it, by how much more should we be supporting native and ancient minstrel tradition?
