LETTERS From Mr A. Attrill, Carisbrooke:

In reply to Caroline Ford’s letter, 'Two letters make such a difference’ (CP, 27-07-12). I find it annoying when the letter o IS added to IoW so it’s time to educate the masses.

The letter o in IoW has been added by Overners and not dropped.

As all Caulkheads know, decades ago when there were no postcodes and letters were addressed by hand, poor handwriting by our neighbours on 'North Island’ gave the GPO nothing but trouble deciding whether to send letters to the Isle of Man (IoM) or the Isle of Wight (IoW).

Sometimes the scribble of a W looked like an M so it was decided that IoM would remain and the Isle of Wight would become IW.
