LETTERS From Dave Talbot, Binstead:
John Wortham always writes with flair but he is factually wrong to write vis-a-vis the PFI (CP, 23-08-13)) "It is somewhat ironic an idea dreamt up by Labour, endorsed by Brown, Balls, and Miliband should be so enthusiastically taken on board by a Conservative council."
PFI was implemented in 1992 by the Conservative government of John Major. The scheme was strongly criticized by the then Labour opposition but, and here is irony, when Labour got into office, PFI continued and expanded. Advocates of PFI include the World Bank, IMF, and CBI.
Those living in the real world recognize PFI for what it actually is: commitment by UK governments to decades of escalating debt funded by the ordinary British taxpayer to satisfy the misconceived private sector good/public sector bad, ideology.
