Representatives of statutory and voluntary organisations across Hertfordshire were at County Hall last week to sign up in support of a campaign to help elderly people claim benefits.

The year-long project, launched by Hertfordshire social services' money advice unit, is part of the council's initiative to combat poverty.

The unit's advisers are working in partnership with Hertsmere Borough Council, the Citizens Advice Bureau and other organisations to help OAPs find out if they are entitled to extra benefits such as income support and attendance allowance.

A county council spokeswoman said: "Nationally, it is estimated that 40 per cent of people aged over 65 don't claim the benefits they are entitled to.

"Based on that figure, there could be as many as 14,000 Hertfordshire pensioners missing out on income support and 10,000 who could be claiming attendance allowance."

It is hoped the project will also assist pensioners in claiming every benefit they are entitled to.
