LETTERS From Mr P. Kennerley, Shanklin:
I READ the article (CP 09-08-13), regarding Island Roads being criticised for making a poor job of resurfacing a cul-de-sac in Northwood, which apparently had a perfectly good concrete surface.
The real question is why were they resurfacing a cul-de-sac when there are miles of busy through roads in a disgraceful condition? The council is paying an officer a huge salary to monitor the PFI scheme. He should publish a quarterly update on how the Island Roads is performing relative to the required timetable of works.
There should be a points system based on the condition of the road surface and the volume of traffic. Island Roads should be required to resurface the worst roads first, not waste its time doing cosmetic cheap resurfacing on cul-de-sacs.
There are many roads that urgently need resurfacing. Examples are the road from Newchurch to Knighton, Shanklin High Street and Brighstone Main Road but there are many more. Island residents and visitors deserve better.
