Store would not bring people into the centre

LETTERS From Marion Draper, Bembridge:

According to your report (CP, 04-07-14), Cllr John Howe believes the new ASDA store will bring more people into the centre of Newport and the smaller shops. It won’t.

Has he ever been in an ASDA store? If so, he will know the aim of ASDA is to supply pretty much everything. Not just groceries but clothes, DIY goods, motoring accessories, kitchenware, electricals, furnishings, toys, sports equipment, books, etc. That will leave only antiques, tourist tat and charity shops for the town centre.

To suggest otherwise is either deceitful or extremely naive. Neither quality is appreciated in an elected councillor whose role is to serve the community.
