THREE generations of bikers are calling on Dartford Council to rev-up plans for a motorcycle track to prevent illegal scramblers damaging ancient woodland.

George Fisher, who introduced schoolboy scrambling to Kent in the 1970s, has campaigned for a council-run motorcycle track for years to stop people scrambling illegally.

He contacted the News Shopper last week after we reported illegal scramblers risked ruining ancient Darenth Wood, a site of special scientific interest.

Mr Fisher, 68, of Essex Road, Longfield, whose son, Terry, was a 14-year-old motorcycle Grand Prix winner in 1974, said: "The people who do this give genuine motorcycle enthusiasts a bad name. If there are no cheap facilities made available, obviously people will be forced to do it illegally."

The only private track in the area is run by Sidcup and District Motorcycle Club at Canada Heights, in Swanley.

Environment charity Groundwork is currently working to set up a training facility in Swanscombe but it is not likely to be ready until the middle of next year.

A Dartford Council spokesman said it was looking at co-ordinated action with the landowners against the scramblers.

A spokesman for Dr Howard Stoate confirmed the MP had asked the police and the council to look at ways of resolving the problem.
