Technology will help us keep Fishbourne clear

Friday, January 26, 2018 - 12:18

From Keith Greenfield, chief executive, Wightlink, Portsmouth:
I WRITE to update Islanders about our £45 million investment in the Fishbourne to Portsmouth route and answer a couple of questions from your readers (CP, 12-01-18 and 19-01-18).
Fishbourne resident Tony Cooper wanted to know more about how we will marshal traffic at the port this summer. Following extensive discussions with Fishbourne Parish Council, we are talking to the IW Council about installing Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology and increasing the number of check-in booths from one to three.
We expect this will radically reduce queuing in Fishbourne Lane this summer as there is ample room at the terminal to park up to 300 cars at any one time. The double-deck boarding ramp has already improved the efficiency of loading and unloading our current flagship, St Clare, and will be used for our new ship, Victoria of Wight. Of course, we will also be installing ANPR at Portsmouth.
We cannot guarantee there will never be congestion on local roads, as problems can arise that are out of our control but I can assure you we are doing our best to address the issue.
G. Lewis, from Ryde, raised the question of timekeeping. Since introducing double-deck loading in July last year, our punctuality on the Fishbourne-Portsmouth route has improved. From 79.3 per cent in August 2016, it rose to 86.7 per cent in August 2017 and 97.4 per cent in December 2017.
We know this because our systems record the exact times of departure and arrival and this forms the basis of all of our published data. We require customers to arrive 30 minutes before their booked departure because colleagues need time to load the ships safely and efficiently with each combination of lorries, coaches, cars etc so they can sail on schedule.
I hope this helps to clarify matters and keeps Islanders up to date with our future plans.
