IT has been reported that Bass Taverns has applied to Enfield Magistrates for approval to rename the George public house in Enfield Town as the Goose and Granite.

The George is situated at the very heart of Enfield Town conservation area and there are records of a George inn on that site dating back to mediaeval times. What brewers such as Bass must realise is that they are but temporary trustees of local history which they must treat with respect. It is not acceptable that a meaningless name dreamt up by a marketing department should usurp the historic reference to the patron saint of England.
