Use Osborne for injured heroes

Friday, March 12, 2010

LETTERSFrom John Weeks, Calbourne:

THE members of the armed forces who die for our country are justly honoured.

Those who are wounded are often forgotten and the resources available for their treatment are inadequate. This is a national disgrace.

We on the IW are uniquely placed to help. Until 2000, two vast wings of Osborne House were used as a rehabilitation centre for disabled servicemen. Now they mainly lie empty and unused.

Why does English Heritage not offer to reopen parts of the house and grounds for our disabled heroes?

Of course, the wards will need refurbishing, re-equipping and staffing, but it is possible our government could be shamed into contributing to the cost.

Many ordinary citizens on the Island would be happy to volunteer to help in one way or another.
