Barmy Arms offers traditional pleasures: DAN MELUNSKY orders a pint on the riverside

The Barmy Arms in Twickenham has a reputation for being a summer pub because of its enviable riverside location.

However, there is a lot more to the Barmy Arms than sipping a pint on a warm summer's afternoon.

Landlord Peter Parr and his partner Lyn Thomas have been running the Barmy Arms for the last 6 months and are determined to keep the pub as traditional as possible.

Peter, who has worked in the pub trade for more than 25 years, disapproves of the growing trend towards more and more themed pubs.

"I have always worked in pubs and do not consider theme bars as being true public houses.

"We hope to keep the traditional spirit of English pubs alive at the Barmy Arms and so we have a large selection of traditional pub games instead of arcade games and pinball machines."

Classic games such as bar billiards and skittles can be played along with others such as Jenga and Connect 4.

Although Peter wants the Barmy Arms to keep its traditional feel, he is not afraid to embrace new technology and the pub's merits are listed on the Internet.

The old 1620s inn is the perfect spot to relax away from the hustle and bustle of central London. You wouldn't believe London was on the doorstep.

The Barmy Arms selection of beers include Directors and they also have a wide range of wines from around the world.

Traditional pub food is served by chef Steve Ashley. He said: "The food is aimed at people who like pub grub but want it prepared with a little sophistication."

The Barmy Arms run 60s and 70s nights and is planning summer concerts featuring folk music, R & B and blues.
