LETTERS From Linda Blowers, Yarmouth:
WHILE Island Roads are to be commended for battling adverse weather conditions to repair our crumbling road system, I feel they are on a hiding to nothing, especially in rural areas.
After heavy rain, surface water may be seen pouring in torrents off the fields and onto the roads, where it either ponds up to form a dangerous flood, or it swirls forcefully downhill, scouring out potholes as it goes.
In days gone by, there were ditches on either side of country roads, but these seem to have have disappeared.
Why is this? Surely it is unfair to expect taxpayers to pay for road repairs that could largely have been averted had adequate drainage been in place.
