100 Years Ago - December 30, 1916

A FEW lucky few soldiers were back home for Christmas, taking a rest after the horrors of The Somme.
The managers at the soldier’s recreation rooms around the Island promoted Christmas cheer for the soldiers frequenting their rooms with music, food, and festive decorations.

75 Years Ago - January 3, 1942

Someone adopted a strange method of celebrating the season of peace and goodwill, as on Boxing night, two stones were thrown through the window of Newport Guildhall.
Island police deduced that the stones had been brought into the town as they were untreated gravel.

50 Years Ago - December 24, 1966

The apparent shortage of young people interested in applied science is not a new problem it would seem.
A series of lectures hoping to entice bright young minds into the field were offered at Carisbrooke Grammar School.
A chief engineer at Westland Aircraft engaged pupils about the space race and how men would one day land on the moon.

25 Years Ago - December 28, 1991

Ryde Tory councillor John Ritchie was seeing red over a cheeky Christmas card he received from Dr Peter Brand, prospective parliamentary candidate for the Liberal Democrats.
The card apparently featured a ballot box wrapped in Lib Dem orange, on which was painted a voter’s cross.
Mr Ritchie accused Dr Brand of fuelling pre-election propaganda.

10 Years Ago - December 29, 2006

An Island soldier was awarded the Military Cross for his bravery in Iraq.
Former Sandown High School pupil Sgt Steven Izsard, 25, received the honour after leading a sniper team through what the Ministry of Defence described as the most intense battle in Iraq since 2004.
