A SRI Lankan man was jailed for three years on Friday for smuggling illegal immigrants through Stansted and Heathrow Airports.

Rohana Ranasinghe, 30, was sentenced at Snaresbrook Crown Court on three counts of facilitation of illegal immigrants, with three years for each charge to run concurrently.

Ranasinghe, who was subject to a deportation order, carried out one of the offences at Stansted Airport and the other two at Heathrow Airport.

An police spokeswoman said: "Essex Police is extremely pleased with this result and will continue working with other agencies to deal with the problem of illegal immigrants.''
