HARLOW Running Club's first cross-country meeting of the season at Stevenage brought a large number of excellent performances, highlighted by a very convincing win in the under-15 girls event by Jackie Socas. She finished some 80 metres clear of the chasing group, despite strong opposition from a field of more than 60 runners.

Superb support came from Liz Muggeridge (tenth) and Tina Testagrossa (12th), although both felt below par after a school trip. April Martin was close behind in 13th, chased by the much improved Naomi Brownless (15th). Eleven-year-old Katie Muirhead took a marvellous sixth spot in the under-13 event and looks to be well on her way to Essex honours, particularly as she still has another year competing in this age group. Kellie Bennett, although not fully fit, did well to finish 20th ahead of newcomer Faye Mackman whose 29th place, after very little training, showed great potential.

Also competing in her first cross-country race was under-11 Kimberley Bicknell who showed her undoubted talent with a very determined ninth. She remains in the same age group next season. Team-mate Amy Catherall was 23rd. The under-17 women's trio of Jenny Edwards, Lucy Jackson and Rebecca Conway, normally all 400m runners, gained valuable stamina training by finishing 18th, 21st and 23rd respectively.

Four of Harlow's 11-year-old boys showed they have the makings of a very useful team for the coming league programme which starts in Welwyn this Saturday. Robin Martin and Richard Mead finished together in 11th and 12th after a spirited battle. Josh Jenner and Paul Elston also impressed, finishing 19th and 28th respectively.
