MUSICTHE Island Concert Band welcomed the new year in with a rousing performance of classical music at Newport’s Medina Theatre on Sunday.
The ensemble entertained a good-sized audience with an extensive programme that comprised a varied range of musical styles.
Conducted by the band’s musical director Robin Tweddle, the show began with the lively opening, the march, Prelude for an Occasion and concluded with a stirring medley of big band favourites, arranged by American composer Bob Louden, that included Satin Doll and Sophisticated Lady.
Other popular pieces performed included Alfred Reed’s El Camino Real, Sousa’s Easter Monday on the Whitehouse Lawn and the march Padstow Lifeboat, composed by Malcolm Arnold.
There were solo performances in the busy programme.
Ryde School student Michael McCree, 17, performed Korb’s Highland Cathedral on the bagpipes and Ryde High School teacher Mark Gregory played Ralph Herman’s Clarinet on the Town.
