THE first Flyte Music Festival at The Chequers Inn proved a hit with music fans.

The Rookley event featured a headline set by recently reformed 1970s Island act Kite, Soultone and JC and Angelina.

"There are so many festival-type events for mainland acts we decided to do something for local talent," said Chequers proprietor Richard Holmes.

Other acts performing over the weekend included Graham McCullough, Lucid and new indie act Vanzatti.

"It was an excellent weekend. We had free camping and things for children to do. We had a lot of families come on the Saturday.

"We are hoping it will grow year on year. It will definitely be back next year but we may try to move it to a warmer month," he said.

The event was organised with music company Flyte, run by Island musician Jamie Griffin.

"I provided the PA system for the beer festival earlier in the year and got talking with Richard about the idea.

"They have got all the beer and the land and I have all the contacts and the gear," he said.

"This was a test to see how things worked. We organised the whole thing in only seven weeks but it went well and people enjoyed it," said Jamie.
