MUSICTHE power of gospel music is hoped to drum up plenty of cash for a life-changing charity that supports orphans in India.
The Medina Community Choir will be performing the concert, in aid of Destitute Children in India, at Newport’s Medina Theatre on Sunday.
The choir, which has raised almost £5,000 for the charity over the past two years, will be performing gospel classics such as O Happy Day and Go Down, Moses as well as Bridge Over Troubled Water and a medley from the hit musical film, Sister Act.
The charity, based in India, was founded by a team of Island doctors.
Hannah Brear, director of the Medina Community Choir, said: "Destitute Children in India takes orphaned children, as young as four, who are left on the streets with no hope and who are abandoned by society, and tries to turn them into literate, productive citizens who are self sustaining and who feel valued, loved and cared for.
"The orphanage was originally founded with only four boys, and the choir’s efforts, along with other Island fundraising events, have enabled them to take on more children. They now care for, house and educate 11 children and with further financial support, they hope to increase their facilities and premises to cater for 30.
"Recent fundraising has enabled the orphanage to build a fishery and small farm with ducks and chickens, which allows the children to sell eggs, grow their own fruit and vegetables and catch fish for them to eat — but also to sell on the markets, learning sustainable crafts and trades, which will stand them in good stead as they grow and leave the orphanage."
The concert starts at 2.30pm.
