MUSICTHE organiser of the Island’s first Didghead Radio Festival has hailed the event a success, after festival-goers were wowed by performances from a host of international musicians.
The event, at Calbourne Water Mill last weekend, featured didgeridoo players from across Europe and Australia, as well as a diverse range of other musicians and performers.
Some of the more unusual instruments included the Swiss hang, Japanese fujara and Russian balalaika. There were also performances by Island samba and djembe drum groups.
Musician and storyteller Dubravko Lapaine, from Croatia, proved to be a particular highlight, and festival-goers were also able to meet the musicians and pick up a few tips at performer-led workshops.
Festival organiser Gerry Priddle, who is passionate about didgeridoo music and runs Didghead Radio, said he was delighted with the 40 acts he had booked and hoped to make the event bigger and better next year.
"I have been inundated with messages from people who could not believe the breadth of what they saw. This was not just a didgeridoo festival, it was an international music festival with the whole gamut of sounds," he said.
"For a first-time festival dealing with such an esoteric part of the music world, we were very pleased with the number of people who attended. People had more than a good time — they had an experience in terms of music and atmosphere that was just so different."
