MUSICAN EVENING of classical music raised more than £400 for the Wessex Cancer Trust.

The event, at Newport’s Minster Church of Sts Thomas, was organised by 20-year-old Miriam Nerval, who lives in Cowes, and is currently studying at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London.

"I decided to organise the event to raise money for the Wessex Cancer Trust. My dad has leukaemia and I’ve had seen the fantastic work the trust does. I wanted to give something back.

"I was really pleased with the way the night went. My group, The Cherry Tree-O, came down from London and we performed a range of classical numbers from the 1700s.

"Everybody seemed to really enjoy themselves and the church was almost full," said Miriam, who plays a range instruments but favours the recorder.

She added: "I’ve performed in several smaller concerts before, but this one was extra special to me."

Miriam hopes to hold another charity event at the church at Christmas time.
