Kingston 34 Old Walcountians 3

A gutsy display by Old Walcountians was not enough to avoid their 12th Surrey League Division One loss on Saturday.

With only four games remaining, Walcountians need a miracle to escape the drop to Surrey League Two.

Walcountians made an adventurous start, with the pack leading a drive into the Kingston 22 in the opening minute and securing a penalty which fly-half Gary Dring converted.

But the home side responded well and, by the fifth minute, had gained the lead through a pushover try by their No 8.

Kingston continued to apply the pressure and began to spread the ball to their backs, resulting in tries to both wingers and a 24-3 lead by the 26th minute.

Walcountians refused to give up and began to make inroads just as Kingston were threatening to run away with the game. The tackling of the three-quarter line was solid and resolute and kept Kingston's backline at bay.

The forwards began to take the ball off Kingston in broken play, with Gary and Rob Hird and Rob Nayman outstanding.

Just before half-time, Walcountians were denied Gary Hird try for a forward pass before Kingston completed the scoring with two second-half touchdowns.

Walcountians take a break from the league next week when they travel to Sanderstead to take on Old Mid-Whitgiftians in a friendly. Kick-off is at 2:30pm.
