A NEW club has been set up to promote jazz music on the Island.

Newport Jazz Club is hoping to hold a series of concerts and recordings, for the benefit of devotees and musicians on the Island.

The events are designed to showcase Island musicians as well as assisting in emerging and encouraging young talent.

The newly formed club’s first event is scheduled for April 11, at the Apollo Theatre, Newport.

It will feature the Phoenix Jazz Ensemble, along with vocalist Nette Robinson and Island musician, Charlie Ross.

Bill Wills, from Newport Jazz Club, said: "For years it’s felt like jazz hasn’t had a look in on the Island — apart from Ventnor Jazz Festival.

"Newport Jazz Club club will help to showcase Island talent and show that there are plenty of good jazz bands and musicians out there.

"It will be good to hopefully introduce youngsters, who are perhaps only familiar with rock music, to jazz music."

Any proceeds received by the sale of concert tickets will be used for payments to musicians, including mainland guest musicians, hire of venues and expenses for advertising.
