West Croydon residents are calling for a speedy response from councillors to cut out accidents on what they say is becoming an accident blackspot.

Lynda Salako of Gloucester Road is one of dozens of people living around the area concerned at the increasing number of minor accidents. She is leading the efforts to get either speed cameras or road humps installed and has enlisted the help of councillor Gerry Ryan (Whitehorse Manor).

She told the Guardian: "The cars come down at such a speed. There have been about 16 minor road accidents in the past few months but the worry is not minor for those of us who live on the road. There is the potential for a serious accident and we want something to be done before it gets to that stage."

Coun Ryan has met with residents and visited the area on Saturday. He said he was not taking the concerns lightly and promised to look into solutions. Coun Ryan said: "Road traffic measures have forced cars into Gloucester Road and residents have seen an increase in the number of accidents. Having been down there myself I know that the speeding in Gloucester Road has raised a number of issues and motorists are clearly breaking the speed limits."

A Croydon Council spokesman said: "We appreciate the concerns of residents and Gloucester Road is included on a list of priority roads for road safety improvements. There are other roads which are in need of more immediate action but we hope to tackle the issues on Gloucester Road in the next financial year."
