TV boost for band?

Cowes Concert Band is hoping for TV boost.

AN ISLAND brass band is hoping a new BBC television series will help boost its playing strength.

Cowes Concert Band is aiming to benefit from BBC2’s A Band For Britain, which features the colourful life of a Yorkshire colliery band. The Island outfit hopes the huge publicity given to brass bands from the three-part series, and accompanying national newspaper coverage, will have a positive spin-off.

"We are about to launch a recruitment campaign and it just so happens that it coincides with A Band For Britain," said Andy Norman, the band leader.

"So we hope the series will make people think about their local brass bands and how music making can be fun and rewarding.

"We always welcome new players but in particular at the moment we need a couple of cornet players."

Cowes Concert Band rehearses on Monday evenings at the parish rooms attached to St Mary’s Church.

Its next concert is at St Mary’s Church on March 22, and during the summer the band will make several appearances at Rylstone Gardens, Shanklin.

Anyone interested in joining can contact Andy on 01983 566826 or 07786 166304. More information about the band is available at www.cowesconcertband.co.uk
