Warm up for jazz weekend

Emma Smith.

MUSIC ONE of the rising young stars of the jazz world, vocalist Emma Smith, is set to appear at the Apollo Theatre, Newport, later this month in Newport Jazz Club’s final concert before July’s hotly anticipated jazz weekend.

Emma, pictured, described as 'unquestionably the next big name on the jazz circuit’ by critics, will be joined by Sandy Suchodolski on bass and renowned trumpeter, Andy Urquhart.

Joining the trio will be Island favourites, Jim Thorn on piano and Terry Dickinson on drums. The concert takes place on Sunday, May 27 at 7.30pm.

A glittering array of stars of jazz have been lined up for the jazz weekend, which takes place between July 20 and 22 in Newport.

Island sax player Gary Plumley, jazz singer Edana Minghella and trumpet maestro Digby Fairweather are just some of the talented musicians who are due to take to the stage.

The weekend is being organised by a group of local volunteers, including musicians and jazz supporters with any profits generated going to the Earl Mountbatten Hospice.
