MUSICA CONCERT to celebrate St George’s Day will launch a weekend of fun for all the family in Cowes.
A grand concert will be headlined by the Royal British Legion’s Central Band at Cowes Yacht Haven tonight (Friday).
The 38-piece ensemble will perform music from the movies and a fantasia of British seafaring songs.
Cowes singer Chloe Phillips, who is studying classical singing at the Trinity College of Music, London, and soprano Margaret Threadbold, will also be performing.
To celebrate St George’s Day, there will be an action-packed weekend of family fun in Northwood Park. The Rotary Club of Cowes will host the free event.
The Saturday programme kicks off with a grand fancy dress procession.
It will set off from East Cowes Town Hall at 11.15am and will reach Northwood Park at 12.30pm, where entries will be judged.
One of the event’s organisers, Cowes Rotarian Barry Myland, said: "We want to put something on for the community that’s land-based, outside the town’s traditional sailing calendar, in celebration of St George’s Day. It’ll be a lot of fun for all the family."
Live music will be provided by the IW Youth Concert Band. There will also be Morris dancing, displays of knights in combat and tae kwan do, various games, children’s activities and stalls. Trophies will be on offer in an inter-club bowling match on the bowling green.
On Sunday, enthusiast clubs will display classic cars and vintage motorbikes, while Wolfguard Viking Group will set up a camp and re-enact battles. The entertainment will also include a tug-o’-war competition and a fashion show.
The programme starts at 10am and ends at 5pm on both days.
