Croydon Central MP Geraint Davies is supporting a change to the laws governing childminding following the sentencing of Linda Bayfield for the manslaughter of baby Joshua Osbourne last month.

Mr Davies was backed by 53 MPs when he tabled an early day motion in the House of Commons on January 23.

The motion drew attention to a three point plan at the helm of an NSPCC campaign calling for all complaints against childminders to be more thoroughly investigated and a register of complaints to be made accessible to parents.

The plan also calls for the smacking of children by childminders to be outlawed and family tax credit to be made available for nanny services.

He said: "I am arranging a meeting with Mr and Mrs Osbourne, the NSPCC and a minister in the education department.

"I am determined to ensure that the law is changed so that we do all that is practically possible to protect children from abuse."

The move comes six weeks after it emerged Bayfield had a string of complaints of "inappropriate chastisement" against her name.
