1,000 rush to sign up for cheaper fuel bills

MORE than a thousand Islanders have already registered their interest in a new deal that could slash energy bills.

Community Action Isle of Wight is leading the Big Wight Switch to help households save money on energy bills, by negotiating cheaper energy tariffs on their behalf.

It is hoped that, by speaking as a single, more powerful unit, thousands of Islanders may be able to reduce gas and electricity bills.

It is now a race against time for Islanders to register their interest either online or over the phone before March 22, when the charity will approach the energy companies to broker a deal.

Philippa Daley, rural services officer at Community Action Isle of Wight, said around 70 per cent of those already registered were over 60, including three residents over 90, while a high proportion had never switched energy companies before and stood to gain the most.

Cllr David Pugh, leader of the Isle of Wight Council, which is supporting the scheme, said: "There has been a real cross-section response from the Island community and we would encourage as many residents as possible to register their interest.

"Those who have never switched energy companies before stand to gain the most but the scheme aims to benefit everyone."

Registering is free, with no obligation to switch providers.

Residents can find out more and register at www.bigwightswitch.co.uk or by calling 01983 539371.

I wonder if Cllr Pugh would support as many residents as possible registering to 'switch' and use one particular ferry company rather than another? Makes you wonder doesnt it?

T.Rollingsworth,
"Perhaps the IWCP has a financial interest in advertising this service....."

Heaven forfend! How dare you sir?

Its almost certainly NOT financial...more institutional "greenism".
If Rayban or any of the other windbags say jump, Marriott says "How high?".
The mere fact that anything to do with Rayban Green, Bigswitch, Egoisland, Green Deal, etc. etc. gets totally FREE publicity, when island businesses have to pay £6,000 for a spread in the CP is neither here nor there.
Charity begins with a "G"!
Put in a planning application/Appeal for a wind farm and the CP will be falling over to help you.

As for your "redacted/removed" comment about moneysupermarket or any of the other excellent switching websites being removed, its hardly surprising.
We must not think or act for ourselves, but must avail ourselves of the expertise of these charities/CICs run by people who have never worked for a living. Good for y

Odd, It appears my comment about switching suppliers via money-supermarket was removed. Perhaps the IWCP has a financial interest in advertising this service.....

On the Egoisland site this appears to be the same idea "For every SSE customer who supports the community energy programme, SSE will reward Ecoisland with threshold bonuses based on the number of customer accounts that join the programme. In addition, SSE will pay a donation of £1 per SSE account per month which you can choose to take as a reduction on your energy bill or donate to Ecoisland." and has now been hijacked by "Community Action"
Also Pugh says "There has been a real cross-section response from the Island community ", while Ms. Daley (no relation to Arthur I trust) says "around 70 per cent of those already registered were over 60,"
Incidentally, we just switched and managed to do it all on our own and saved £200 a year with Cooperative Energy.
