COUNCILLORS put party politics at the top of the agenda when they agreed to help fund local knees-ups to mark the Queen's Golden Jubilee in June.

The move was agreed by members of all parties at a meeting of the council's executive board on Tuesday night.

The package on offer to events catering for less than 500 guests each covers the cost of placing any traffic orders needed to close off streets for one day during the national holiday from Saturday, June 1, to Tuesday, June 4.

Also included is the cost of public liability insurance to the value of £5 million, which organisers will need before they hold a street event.

Road signs and barriers will be will be made available, with a small charge if demand exceeds supply.

Council leader Vince Muspratt said: "We want to make sure anyone who wants to celebrate can make the Golden Jubilee bank holiday a fun time they can remember for the rest of their lives.

"That is why we are supporting people who want to hold street parties where old and young can get together and celebrate this very special anniversary in their own communities."

About a dozen streets in various parts of the town have made enquiries about holding parties with nine applications for traffic restrictions or road closures.

Applications must reach the council by Thursday, March 28.
