THE CROWDS came out on Saturday to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Bembridge RNLI Lifeboat Station.
A service of thanksgiving, conducted by the Rev Dr Amanda Bloor, honorary chaplain to Bembridge RNLI, was held near the boathouse at midday for the volunteer lifeboat crew members, the fundraising guild and their families, representatives of the RNLI’s headquarters and the local community.
Lord Lieutenant of the IW and president of the IW Lifeboat Board, Maj Gen.Martin White, unveiled a commemorative plaque and RNLI trustee Michael Sturrock gave thanks for the station's 150 years.
Mr Sturrock also thanked Steve Simmonds, coxswain of the lifeboat since 2003, was also thanked for his 30 years of service to the station.
Bembridge RNLI lifeboats, the Tamar class Alfred Albert Williams and inshore lifeboat Norman Harvey, carried out a series of sail pasts together with lifeboats from Yarmouth, Selsey, Portsmouth and Hayling Island.
