£3m boost for building firm

By Emily Pearce - Friday, February 5, 2010

FRESHWATER building firm MCM Construction is celebrating winning three new contracts, worth £3million, since Christmas.
The company is now set to refurbish buildings at Southlands Caravan Park, Newchurch, build the new Bembridge lifeboat station and construct a new, luxury shooting lodge, with accommodation, at New Barn Farm, Shorwell.
And despite figures released this week by the Construction Skills Network, predicting a slow return to growth for the construction industry over the next four years, the firm also plans to recruit more staff to its 40-strong workforce and move to new premises, in Daish Way, Newport.
Managing director Brendan McMahon, who founded the company in 1992, said he was delighted.
"Last year was a particularly bad year and we have had to tighten our belts and price more competitively but we seem to have hit the market at the right level now," he said.
"We remain committed to training our workforce, as I believe it will give us the competitive edge when the market starts to pick up.
"I’m confident for the future and we are optimistic that investing now will enable us to reap the benefits as the industry starts to steadily grow."
