Employees will now be able to up-date their IT skills without leaving work, thanks to a new local initiative.

Brunel University in Uxbridge is working with Brent Council; the NW London Training and Enterprise Council, and the NW London Chamber of Commerce to develop the Lifelong Learning System, launched last week.

The scheme allows compaies to put their staff through training without sending them on college courses.

Employers can buy CD-rom learning packages which employees can use at work. Subjects covered range from how to use specific computer programs to management skills.

A spokeswoman for Brunel University said: "While many employers recognise the importance of training they are not always able or willing to release staff to attend training.

"The Lifelong Learning System enables individuals to schedule training when suitable to them and their employers."

She said the scheme had been partly funded by the European Union.
