PLANS to build 26 homes in a quiet village on the Isle of Wight have proved unpopular with residents.
The proposed development at School House Meadow, off Whitwell High Street, includes affordable two and three-bedroom houses and bungalows, a shop, children's playground and public toilets.
A public meeting, held at the White Horse Inn last Thursday, was attended by more than 100 people.
Architect Martin Hayles, acting on behalf of developer Malcolm Perry, gave a presentation and answered questions about the project.
Vice-chairman of Niton and Whitwell Parish Council, Cllr Tim Addison, said villagers were largely sceptical about the proposals.
"Overall it was not positive but it's very early days. No date has been given for lodging a planning application," he said.
"Several issues were raised, including traffic management, the flood risk and the impact on the wildlife. People asked if the village needed or wanted the proposed amenities.
"From the mood of the meeting, it didn't seem popular.
"It was encouraging to see so many people at the meeting though, to have a conversation about it and understand the pros and cons."
Although there was some support for a shop or playground on the Whitwell Village Facebook page, and a plea for housing for families and younger people, almost everyone criticised the plans.
Kelly Moses-Sawyers said: "If people want more buses and a busy village then move to a town and leave our quiet rural village as just that."
Rosemary Jones said: "Although we are fairly new to the village, we moved here from the mainland for the peace, tranquility and beauty of the countryside.
"We don't need any more houses. It will ruin this lovely village."
Mr Hayles declined to comment when contacted by the County Press.
