SECURING a new 'all-weather attraction', such as a Center Parcs or a water-based theme park, is a priority for the newly elected Isle of Wight Council Conservative administration, according to council leader, Cllr Dave Stewart.
In his first extended interview since the Tories won power in May, Cllr Stewart told the County Press the Island's unique climate would make it a fantastic base for a new park and provide a huge shot in the arm for the Island's tourism industry during the winter months.
He said: "I like Center Parcs and the idea of an 'eco dome' on the Island.
"We have also talked about a water-based theme park for the Island. Something that is attractive to people coming to the Isle of Wight. It would bring with it jobs and hotels."
Other priorities high on the council's wish list include securing secondary education in Sandown Bay, improving and securing the long-term future of IslandLine and an ambition that there should be 'zero unemployment' on the Island.
He said: "My aspiration is all people who are able to work have the opportunity to have a job.
"I recognise some people can't and we need to support them."
Turning to the future of IslandLine, he said the eight-and-a-half-mile route needed to be made 'fit for purpose'.
"The council's cabinet member for transport, Cllr Ian Ward, and I have had an early meeting with First MTR.
"We want trains that are fit for purpose. We want to see improvements to rolling stock and services and better links between the trains and the ferries.
"We have to find a way to make the line sustainable."
