A NATIONAL bacon shortage has affected McDonald's breakfasts on the Isle of Wight.

Both its Newport and Ryde branches have been affected by the national shortage of back bacon.

It is a problem which has rumbled on for several days since restaurants around the country first started to announce they had run out of rashers.

McDonald's has blamed the shortage of bacon on "supply issues".

Most of its restaurants have not had any bacon since last Friday, forcing them to remove bacon rolls, bacon and egg McMuffins, and bacon and egg bagels from the menu.

An employee at an Island McDonald's outlet said disgruntled customers who love their bacon - a key component of its breakfast meals - have been going elsewhere to eat.

McDonald's tweeted: "We're experiencing a short term issue with the supply of our bacon, meaning some breakfast items may be temporarily unavailable in some restaurants.

"We're working closely with our suppliers to sort this as soon as possible."

It is understood the company sources its bacon from the same place for all its outlets.
