ALCOHOL is the secret to a long life according 101-year-old Douglas Payn.

The Wetherspoons superfan has visited more than 60 different Wetherspoon pubs over the course of his lifetime and is now celebrating his milestone birthday at Solent Grange nursing home in Wootton Bridge.

Douglas was born at Battle, East Sussex, in 1916 and grew up in Bexhill before moving to Brighton.

He worked as an apprentice watchmaker and at the outbreak of the war joined the RAF, training as an aircraft mechanic.

During the war he saw active service and was stationed in North Africa, where he returned as a veteran several years ago.

Douglas has two children, Vivienne and Brian, who sadly died in March 2017, two grandchildren and one great-grandson.

He played saxaphone and clarinet and was an enthusiastic member of of the RAF band.

After the war he settled down in Brighton and worked as an instrument maker.

As well as Wetherspoons he has a passion for dogs, owning seven over his lifetime.

Douglas' daughter, Vivienne Baldock, said: "I think he would say the secret to a long life is drinking - in moderation!

"We call it his jungle juice, and we used to take him to visit pubs and Wetherspoons across the country."
