CELEBRATED Isle of Wight actor Geoffrey Hughes has died.
The actor, who was famous for his roles as Eddie Yeats in ITV soap opera Coronation Street and Onslow in the BBC comedy Keeping Up Appearances, is reported to have died last night (Friday).
Mr Hughes, who also starred in the Royle Family, had received care at the Earl Mountbatten Hospice in recent years, after being diagnosed with cancer.
Fellow actor and friend Ricky Tomlinson, who confirmed the news to
ITV said: "Geoff was not just an actor. He was my mate."
A Coronation Street spokesman told ITV: "We are very sad to hear of the death of Geoffrey Hughes.
"He created a legendary and iconic character in Eddie Yates who will always be part of Coronation Street. Everyone connected with the programme sends our sincerest condolences to his family and friends."
Mr Hughes lived with his wife Sue, in Newport, and together the couple ran wood supply company
Wood End Enterprises.
