Allegations denied by commissioner

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Police and Crime Commissioner Simon Hayes.

HAMPSHIRE and the Isle of Wight police and crime commissioner Simon Hayes has denied he did anything wrong after he was accused of lying about where he lives.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission is investigating allegations Mr Hayes lives with his wife in Northamptonshire, despite giving his address as Bishop’s Waltham, Hampshire.

Mr Hayes could face prosecution for election fraud if was not living inside the Hampshire police area on the day he was elected to his £85,000-a-year role.

However, Mr Hayes hit back, saying Hampshire was his home and had been for decades.

He added he had been living in the county before, during and after the election and was living in Hampshire at present.

He added his wife was living elsewhere in the country but that had no bearing on where he lived.

In a statement, he said: "I am content I filled in the nomination form correctly."
