Alternative Race for Life to go ahead

AN unofficial alternative to Race for Life is to go ahead.

Event organiser Sue Plummer had cancelled her unofficial alternative event after the Isle of Wight Council said she would need to complete licensing paperwork and risk assessments, as well as pay around £300 for costs and insurance.

But Ryde Inshore Rescue has stepped in to save the Sunday, July 29 event, by allowing it to be held using its existing public liability insurance and infrastructure.

The Isle of Wight Council also offered to allow people to take part in its Park Run event as an alternative and it is understood some Race for Life runners will join the Park Run on August 18.

Sue,43, of Elm Close, said: " Ryde Inshore Rescue have been fabulous and the Isle of Wight Council has been pretty darn helpful.

"It was a bit sad to have to cancel the event, I would have walked with my friends, but it would not have been the same. You need everyone there, with people all dressed up, to get that atmosphere.

"I am overwhelmed by the support. There is a lot of support out there, which you don't realise is there until times like this, when you realise that we have some really caring people on the Island."

Anyone who wishes to take part in the event should meet at the entrance to Appley, near Ryde Inshore Rescue's HQ at 10am. The race will start at 10.30am.
