TOM Petty and the Heartbreakers closed the first night of the Isle of Wight Festival with a spectacular set of classic American rock.

They played a combination of old and new tracks, including Learning to Fly and Free Falling, as well as hits by the Travelling Wilburys.

Other performances included a high-energy set by the chart-topping Example, epic anthems from Elbow and a rip-roaring show by openers Feeder.
