Anger after vandals target charity bus

THE outraged chairman of a group, that looks after deaf children, has condemned vandals who smashed windows of its minibus and stole £2,000 worth of equipment.
Helen Foster, who runs the Saturday Club, said the bus was targeted by vandals in Portsmouth, after it was left for about an hour in Edinburgh Road, while she took a group of deaf German children for a meal two weeks ago.
Half the bus’s windows were smashed on one side and two digital cameras, a MacBook Pro laptop and a camcorder, all stored in a bag underneath a seat, were stolen.
The club’s paperwork and its cheque book were also taken.
The German children were visiting the country for the first time and were having a meal before coming to the Island for a holiday.
Helen said: “The children were very tearful and upset and the teachers were just the same. They were all very frightened.
“I do think whoever did this saw us store the equipment and leave the bus but I find the whole thing so upsetting.
“We have logos all over the bus saying we’re a charity and it makes me so sad anyone could do this.”
The windows of the bus have now been replaced but it is unlikely the club will be able to afford to replace the equipment, used by the club’s 38 Island members, which was paid for using a grant.
Police in Portsmouth are investigating but have yet to find those responsible or recover any of the stolen items.
