FANS OF BBC2’s Antiques Road Trip flocked to Island Auction Rooms last week to watch an episode of the show being filmed.

Presenters Charlie Hanson and James Braxton had spent the week snapping up bargains at local antique shops and flea markets, ahead of a big sale at the Shanklin auction rooms.

They managed to sell several items for a profit, including a collection of Roman coins for £75, an unusual 19th century French book-binding vice for £160 and a large oak-and-brass-mounted tantalus — for holding decanters — and games compendium for £270.

Island Auction Rooms auctioneer and valuer Warren Riches said: "There was a lot of interest in the auction and the place was completely packed with people. Antiques Road Trip is a popular show and people were really excited to watch it being filmed.

"We also had a lot of people watching via a webcam and bidding online."

Warren is no stranger to appearing on TV, as the auction rooms have also played host to Flog It, Cash in the Attic and Dickinson’s Real Deal.

"We are quite well known now and it’s definitely helped the business," he said.

"You can’t put money on that kind of exposure."

The Isle of Wight episode of Antiques Road Trip is due to be screened in September.
