ISLANDERS will be able to take advantage of free health checks next week, thanks to a scheme launched by the Blood Pressure Association.

During the charity’s Know Your Numbers event, from Monday to Sunday next week, free blood pressure checks are being offered at "pressure stations" across the country.

At last year’s event, 26 per cent of people tested on the Island gave high readings, which could indicate a risk of strokes and heart attacks.

Mike Rich, of the Blood Pressure Association said: "One in three UK adults have high blood pressure, yet only a quarter know their blood pressure numbers.

"This ignorance is causing death and disability, so that’s why we’re asking the public: 'Are you gambling with your health?’"

Free checks will be available at Day Lewis pharmacies at Cowes High Street, Sandown Road, Lake, and Regent Street, Shanklin.
