AN ISLE of Wight asthma research centre based at St Mary’s Hospital, Newport, is sharing in the glory of international recognition for its work helping allergy experts in Southampton.

The asthma, allergy and immunology service at Southampton’s teaching hospitals has been named as a world centre of excellence by the World Allergy Organisation.

The service has close links with the David Hide Asthma and Allergy Research Centre on the Isle of Wight.

The accolade means the University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust along with the University of Southampton’s department of allergy is the only allergy study centre in the world to achieve 'excellent’ status.

Various projects underway involve studying the effects of both genetic and environmental factors and how changes in the make-up of genes can play a role in altering the risk of allergic disease to see how the process can be reversed.

Professor Hasan Arshad, a consultant at Southampton General and chair of allergy and clinical immunology at the University of Southampton said: "To be named the world centre of is a tremendous achievement and testament to the magnificent progress in patient care and research done by some truly exceptional people."
