STAFF at St Mary's Hospital who went the extra mile for patients were praised at an awards ceremony. 


Two patient transport officers who saved a man's life by recognising the seriousness of his condition and diverting their vehicle to the emergency department were honoured, along with two nurses who extinguished a fire caused by a confused patient

Isle of Wight NHS Trust chief executive, Karen Baker, said: "As a former nurse and midwife I know the extraordinary lengths our staff go to delivering caring services to Islanders.

"Each month we take the opportunity to recognise individuals who have gone the extra mile or set a great example for colleagues.

"Particular congratulations to midwife Danielle Coombes and cancer nurse Emmaline Cornwell who were nominated by a patients and carers as Employee of the Month for October and November 2016.

"Week in week out our staff strive to do their very best for patients and it is important that we take the time to appreciate those who are outstanding at what they do for us all." 

The following awards were given out at last week's event:

• Employee role model — Adam Harvey, theatre support worker, surgery, women’s and children’s clinical business unit.

• Employee role model — Kirsty Robertson, senior staff nurse, and Julie Henriette–Weaver, senior healthcare assistant, pre assessment & admissions unit, clinical support, cancer and diagnostics clinical business unit.

• Employee role model — Kristie Garcillanosa, staff nurse, and Kate Nelson, bank staff nurse.

• Going the extra mile — Maria Darby, faculty team leader, children’s outpatients, surgery, women’s and children’s clinical business unit. 

• Going the extra mile — Margaret Hind and Geoff Turner, patient transport care assistants, ambulance, urgent care and community services clinical business unit. 

• Going the extra mile — Danny Siegal, print room manager and David Renouf, print room operative, corporate services.

• Employee of the month, October 2016 — Danielle Coombes, midwife, maternity service, surgery, women’s and children’s clinical business unit. 
 
• Employee of the month, November 2016 — Emmaline Cornwell, lung cancer/MacMillan clinical nurse specialist, clinical support, cancer and diagnostics clinical business unit.
