Bad odour over two MPs plan

Chris Packham, Island MP Andrew Turner and Charlotte Corney.

THE OneWight campaign hit a significant milestone last weekend, with more than 10,000 people signing the paper petition or signed up on-line.

The presence of the OneWight bus attracted great attention at the Garlic Festival, with at times long queues formed to sign the bus and the petition.

Mr Tiger, from Sandown Zoo, also got in on the action — attracting interest from the crowds as he stood on the open-top bus waving a poster showing his support for the OneWight campaign.

There was interest from other high-profile figures, as well.

Television presenter and wildlife expert Chris Packham, visiting the Garlic Festival with Charlotte Corney, from Sandown Zoo, recognised the Isle of Wight was unique and signed the petition which will be presented to Parliament on September 6.

Support also came from the Wurzels, who played to a good-natured and spirited crowd on Saturday afternoon.

Tommy Banner, the longest serving member of the band, said: "Splitting the Island would be like someone from Scotland trying to represent the Isle of Wight."

Andrew Turner, the Island’s MP, said: "I am sure any MP would try their best but it is hard to see how a cross-Solent MP could be a part of both the Island and mainland communities and represent both effectively."

Campaign co-ordinator Cllr Ian Ward said: "We still want as many signatures as possible and, with only 12 days left, we are asking people to sign up on-line or wherever they see a "Sign the Petition Here" sign."
