Bar can rock on

LIVE bands and DJs can continue performing at Ryde's Wight Rock bar, but with new restrictions, an Isle of Wight Council licensing committee decided today (Thursday).

The licensing review was held after complaints from nearby residents about noise from the Lind Street bar.

The regulatory committee today amended the premises license, held by bar owners Shaun and Deborah Newnham, to say noise from live music nights must be contained within the building, or be only 'barely audible' to neighbours.

The committee said a formal sound check with the council's assistance must be carried out to assess the noise from the venue during live music and a log book of complaints must be kept on the premises with details of any complaints and the action taken to resolve it.

The new licence restrictions will come into effect after 21 days, if no appeal has been lodged.

Supporters of the bar launched a campaign ahead of the hearing, fearing it could be forced to close.

Having re-read this article, I would also like to clear up a potential misconception here - the complaint that led to this review was from ONE property, located on the floor directly above the bar, and the issue is due to an access shaft that runs through both properties. The article seems to imply that there were a number of complaints, when in fact there were not. Ironically, Wight Rock are one of the few bars in Ryde that I WOULD drink in, largely due to their friendly atmosphere, their community spirit and the fact that they are particularly choosy over their clientele. Just for the record, I am in no way affiliated with the bar, or it's owners.

Sorry, Mrs James, your point is a little unclear - in what way does the music being free or not have any relevance to the issue of noise??

People who live at the back of Ryde High Street expect silence on a Friday/Saturday night? Why the hell did they move there in the first place, muppets!
The mentality of some people astonishes me.

Have Shaun and Deborah Newnham considered charging the local residents for the entertainment if not , whats the problem...
Maybe this time common sense has prevailed :)
